However, with a building that already has another water heater with an expansion tank on the same cold water lines, one does not need a second expansion tank. Regarding maintenance, the anode is sacrificial and designed to corrode instead of the steel. Water impurities and electrolytes from water filters can accelerate corrosion, and the anode needs to be replaced annually to avoid unpleasant brown or rotten egg smells and to extend its lifespan.
